North Texas doctors say we could be in for a doozy of a flu season.

“I do expect that this year, the flu season will be worse than it was last year … and worse than the year before that,” says Dr. Joseph Chang, Chief Medical Officer at Parkland Health. “At this time last year we didn’t have as many cases as we already have.”

Dr. Chang says flu may seem run-of-the-mill, but it still kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. “We don’t talk about it a lot, but it’s definitely deadly … and very dangerous for high-risk groups.”

If you want to make it through flu season unscathed, Dr. Chang recommends getting a flu shot. And with the holidays coming up, he says you shouldn’t feel bad about rejecting a hug from your sneezy Uncle Ned or keeping your distance from Grandma if you’ve been feeling under the weather.

“It’s definitely not rude to say, ‘You know what? You appear appear to be ill. I don’t want to be ill, so maybe we just fist bump this year,’”Dr. Chang says. “Grandma may not want to hear that, but it’s to keep Grandma safe.”
