Rallies have been growing in North Texas in support of Ukraine. Sunday, several hundred Ukrainian Americans marched around Southlake Town Square, calling for NATO to implement a no-fly zone.
The group held a rally on the steps of Southlake Town Hall and then walked around Town Square with signs and American and Ukrainian flags.
"We are all one, so let's just connect and pray," an organizer said over a bullhorn at the beginning of the rally.
The group heard speeches and sang songs as they walked.
"It's very hard," says Oksana Malyshchak, whose parents still live in Ukraine. "It's very hard every day to know family members over there are struggling and being bombarded every day. Civilians. Civilians."
"It's really hard for us to imagine," says Arti Zulali, who says his grandfather still lives in Ukraine. "They're sitting getting air-striked. That's so hard to comprehend. Southlake, Texas or Dallas just getting air-striked in the middle of the night. That's something you can't really experience here in the United States.
His mother, Kate, says prayer services and rallies have been the only way to show support for family still in Ukraine.
"We can't do anything to help them," she says. "The only thing we can do is pray and offer financial support."
The family had been planning a trip to Ukraine. Zulali's other son, Dea, says they had been talking about the trip for years, but they had to postpone it when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 then again because of COVID.
"We're so incredibly proud. We love our mother and our heritage and where we come from," he says.
The Ukrainian Cultural Club of Dallas has been organizing rallies across the Metroplex. More information is available at facebook.com/UkrainiansinDallas .
