Dallas (1080 KRLD) - Every 100-miles you drive on the North Texas tollway system will cost you an extra buck starting July 1st. The North Texas Tollway Authority will be raising rates.

“If you are an average tolltag user, say $40.00 a month, it’s going to go up about $2.50, somewhere around there,” said Michael Rey, spokesman for the NTTA.

The increase is built into the Tollway Authority’s structure which has resulted in an increase every other year. Most of the money is earmarked for debt reduction.

“We have borrowed 9-and-a-half billion dollars to build and expand our tollway system.” Rey said.  “On top of that we are also investing nearly $2 billion more to make the tollways wider and in some cases extend them.”

Rey was uncertain how much revenue the new toll rate will bring in because the driving habits of customers have been so erratic during the pandemic. The pay-as-you-drive system has suffered a lapse in revenue as the roads across the nation emptied out during the height of the coronavirus shut down.
