The chief of a Texas Panhandle volunteer fire department and one of his firefighters were killed when a semi slammed head-on into their department's SUV.

State troopers tell us it happened on Highway 54 near Dalhart.

The two were returning to the station from a call, when an 18-wheeler traveling the opposite direction attempted to pass on the two-lane road -- and slammed head-on into the Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department rig carrying Fire Chief Curtis Brown and firefighter Brendan Torres.

We are learning from the Dallam County Judge and the Hartley County Judge that they are jointly declaring Thursday, October 6 to be Curtis Brown and Brendan Torres Celebration of Life Day in both counties.

Services for both men will be Monday, October 10th at Rita Blanca Coliseum in Dalhart.
