Parkland Hospital is opening two additional COVID-19 wards to help treat the surge in new patients due to the fast-spreading omicron variant.

Parkland is gearing up to treat more COVID patients as the surge in Omicron cases hits DFW. Dr. Jospeh Chang, Parkland’s Chief Medical Officer, says in a matter of days, the number of COVID patients being treated by Parkland has nearly doubled.

Dr. Chang tells NBC 5 the hospital system is opening additional COVID wards to help with the surge. The wards provide more room for patients, but staffing shortages are still a big issue as healthcare workers get infected with the virus.

Dr. Chang says yesterday, twice the number of staff were out sick compared to last week.
