Plano ISD is the latest district in North Texas that will require masks on its campuses.
The board called the emergency meeting to take up the matter and in the end, voted 6-1 to temporarily require masks to be worn indoors and on district buses.
"This temporary measure will be effective through Friday, September 24, or until there is further guidance on GA-38 as a result of ongoing state and federal litigation or legislative action," the district said in an official statement.
Masks will not need to be worn while sitting during meals or when outside. As for athletics and the performing arts, masks will still need to be worn: "except when the mask inhibits a student's full participation in the activity."
Board President David Stolle says masks are needed to make sure that students can return to the classroom. Parents also spoke to the board before they made their decision. Dozens of protestors on both sides of the issue gathered outside the district's headquarters before the meeting.
According to the district, nearly 200 students currently have the virus.
