With Christmas in the review mirror, police are warning residents about “box stalkers.”
"Box stalking is a crime where potential burglars go out and drive around neighborhoods on trash pickup days and identify houses to target where trash is left out that identifies expensive items that were purchased for Christmas," Mckinney police Ofc. Trent Davis said. "They then wait a few days or weeks... and try to pick up those items."
Davis said there are ways to avoid making a box stalker’s hit list. His advice? Don’t put any boxes out by the road that might hint there is a new valuable item, like a TV or computer, inside the home.
Also, make sure you don’t put trash out early. Davis said dropping boxes off at a waste management site is ideal, but if you can’t do that, you should break them down and put them in trash bags.
If you see anyone suspicious in your neighborhood, any potential box stalkers prowling the streets, Davis said to call the local police department immediately.
