President Joe Biden has signed a bill sponsored by lawmakers from Texas that will direct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to come up with a plan for finding and eliminating underground tunnels between the U.S. and Mexico.

Cartels have been using tunnels since the late 1980's to smuggle drugs, people and weapons across the border. The bill is called the DHS Illicit Cross-Border Tunnel Defense Act.

"This bill will help seal the more than 230 underground tunnels beneath the U.S.-Mexico border that drug cartels and human traffickers are currently using," said Congressman August Pfluger, R-Midland. "Customs and Border Protection will have the tools and resources they need to develop a plan, destroy the tunnels, and prevent these dangerous products from flowing into Texas."

The bill also directs CPB to conduct a resource assessment to determine the technology and staffing needs necessary to implement the plan.

"By eliminating the cartels’ use of tunnels, we can stem the flow of narcotics and human trafficking into the U.S., and I'm glad this legislation is now law," said Senator John Cornyn.
