As expected, Texas Rangers' ace Jacob deGrom had season-ending Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow Monday and manager Bruce Bochy says "all went well."
Tommy John surgery is named for the long-time Major League pitcher who was the first to have the operation and return to have further success.
It involves removing a ruptured elbow ligament and replacing it with a ligament from another part of the body.
Ten years into his career, John had the operation. He missed the 1975 season for rehab but returned in 1976 and ended up winning 164 games over the next 14 seasons with his new elbow ligament.
Early in his career, deGrom had his first Tommy John surgery. He has since won 84 games.
Tommy John recovery and rehab generally takes at least one year to 15-months. So, deGrom will miss the rest of this season and the first part of 2024 as well.
