Richardson City Hall is closed after a fire ripped through the building early this morning.

The flames broke out around 3 a.m. and caused significant damage, especially on the first floor of the building. City Hall is closed today and workers have been asked to stay home. Phone services are also down, anyone who calls will get a busy signal. Emergency communications like 911 are still available.

"Of course, City Hall is the location for a lot of primary services," says Greg Sowell, with the city. "People come in here to pay water bills or get permits, things like that. A lot of those services are available online, but for anybody wanting or needing to come here ... we are looking for a new location."

That location hasn't been determined just yet, but Sowell says the city will update everyone sometime this week. In the meantime, tonight's city council meeting has been moved to the community room in the Richardson Public Library.

Fortunately, the building was empty when the fire broke out, and nobody was hurt. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.

The extent of the damage is still being determined, and it’s unclear how long it will be before City Hall can reopen.
