Scammer uses Southlake DPS' Facebook page to find targets

A scammer passing himself off as a handsome man looking for love is targeting his would-be victims on Southlake DPS' Facebook page.

A man passing himself off as someone named Thomas Mayta is reaching out to women who leave comments on Southlake DPS' Facebook posts, sometimes as public replies and sometimes through direct messages, asking to be close friends.

Southlake DPS says this is all a scam, and what the guy really wants is not love, but money. While he passes himself off as an orthopedic surgeon originally from Washington, DC, the name in the URL is actually Serah Uzoho, and many of his connections are from Nigeria.

Officer Brad Uptmore says there's nothing the department can do to keep him away from its Facebook page.

"If the forum's open to everybody, the forums open, we can't violate anyone's first amendment rights by blocking or hiding or deleting comments," Uptmore said.

Uptmore says the fact that the man types in broken English is another red flag.
