Back on February 13th Senator Cornyn tweeted that he agreed with Speaker Pelosi on a 911-type investigation into the Capitol attack. He even added that he thought it would help prevent attacks like this from happening again.
Three months later the senior Senator from Texas has softened on that opinion. “It’s clear that as time has gone by that this is designed primarily to achieve political results rather than to find out exactly what happened on the 6th,” said Cornyn on a conference call with reporters.
Cornyn also cited Speaker Pelosi’s original proposals for the commission that called for 7 Democrats and 4 Republicans as another reason for opposition.
The House bill to establish the commission that was passed by the US House of Representatives actually called for equal representation.
Cornyn isn’t opposed to investigating the January 6th attack. His opposition seems to come from outsourcing it, which would take control out of the lawmaker’s hands. “Right now I don’t know what the final outcome will be, but I’m certainly leaning toward using the existing bipartisan committees in the Senate and the House to get to the bottom of this,” said Cornyn.
