At least a dozen North Texas communities with nearly 2 million residents are being asked to conserve water.

The North Texas Municipal Water District is asking residents to reduce their outdoor water use immediately after the Wylie Water Treatment Plant Complex ceased production unexpectedly over the weekend.

Officials say three other water treatment plants in Wylie are up and running, so there's plenty of water to drink. But outdoor watering right now puts a lot of undue pressure on the system.

The North Texas Municipal Water District serves more than a dozen cities in Collin, Rockwall, Kaufman and part of Dallas County.

One of the affected cities is Plano where spokesman Steve Stoler says "...this conservation request is due to water production quantity, not water quality. Our water is safe to drink and use."
