The small, single-engine aircraft had been on a trailer, participating as a float in the annual Texas Rice Festival parade in Winnie, about an hour east of Houston.

Afterward, the pilot elected to take off from a stretch of Highway 124 in Winnie. But he was barely airborne when one wing clipped a street light and a traffic signal at an intersection, sending the plane smashing to the pavement where it bounced once and flipped upside down.

Despite the wreck, the pilot walked away and told investigators he planned to go to the doctor to get checked out.
