As the new school year rapidly approaches, there are a few changes in the COVID-19 vaccination schedule in Tarrant County for July.
Says starting this month, they're essentially combining vaccine operations at Hurst Fire Station 1 and at Resource Connection in Fort Worth.
"We're going to do about three and a half days at Resource Connection and about three days at Hurst, and we will have late days on Wednesdays and Thursdays," says Tarrant County Public Health Director Vinny Taneja. "In essence, we'll have all seven days covered. It's just going to be split up between the two sites."
Resource Connection will be open Sunday through Wednesday, and Hurst will be open Thursday through Saturday.
The Sunday schedule at Resource Connection is reduced to noon to 2 p.m.
"We were (previously) doing about a half a day on Sundays," says Taneja, "and most of the traffic was within the first couple hours."
The Sundance Square location is going to Fridays only starting this month, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
"Saturdays weren't working out too well, but Fridays were doing pretty good," Taneja says. "So we're going to stay throughout the month of July, so another three or four Fridays we'll be there."
The Main Public Health Clinic in Fort Worth, the Southeast Public Health Clinic in Arlington and at the Watauga Public Health Clinic will have extended hours, so that kids can get all of their back-to-school vaccinations, not just the COVID-19 vaccine.
"We're going to have extended hours -- 12 hour days, so either 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.," says Taneja. "And then we'll have Saturday coverage at Watauga and Arlington and Sunday coverage at the main building. The idea to do this in July, is to encourage parents to get an early start on back to school vaccinations."
In fact, in order for kids 12 and older to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the first day of school, this coming Monday -- July 12 -- is the deadline to get that first dose.
Currently, the Pfizer vaccine is the only vaccine approved for kids 12 to 17, so they will need to get a second dose 21 days after getting their first dose.
