Weatherford (1080 KRLD) - All the heavy rain we've been experiencing the last few weeks has some residents in Parker County on edge.

The Brazos River Authority has had to open three floodgates at Possum Kingdom Lake as the recent heavy rain has caused the lake level to rise significantly.

That's causing the Brazos River to overflow its banks, threatening some homes with flooding in the area.

"We have warned residents in the area to prepare and seek higher ground if they have a history of flooding," says Sean Hughes, Parker County emergency management coordinator. "We do have a shelter open at Spring Creek Baptist Church at 100 Spring Creek Rd. (in Weatherford), staffed and run by the American Red Cross."

One of the three floodgates has since been closed.

"Today at about 10:05, the Brazos River Authority did in fact close that third gate," says Hughes, "which reduced the outflow from Possum Kingdom to about 17,700 cubic feet per second."

The Brazos River is expected to crest at just under 25 feet at around 5:00 Tuesday evening.

Hughes says it'll be a few days before things are back to normal.

"We'll probably be watching the river for the next three or four days and have resources in place to react and respond as needed," Hughes says.
