CEDAR HILL, TX (1080 KRLD) - The charges against the suspect involved in the shooting at a medical clinic Tuesday have been upgraded after police learned he was targeting his ex-girlfriend.

Police say 34-year-old Bryan McGee had threatened his ex-girlfriend the night before the shooting. They say he choked her during an argument, then followed her to her mother's house - and paced a bullet underneath her car tire.

Police say he showed up at the clinic where she worked on Tuesday and opened fire. He shot and injured the doctor in charge of the clinic as he was trying to get to safety.

McGee is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and now, charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer.

The police chief of Cedar Hill provided an update on the shooting Wednesday where he confirmed the suspect's identity as well as the initial charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Chief Reyes said the shooting appeared to have been a planned attack, and revealed McGee's ex-girlfriend works at the facility. She was not the victim who was shot.  Methodist Health System says that doctor who was shot is now out of the hospital, and resting at home.

Chief Reyes says body camera video shows McGee firing at officers before they fired at him. He says at one point, the suspect dropped his gun and the shooting stopped, but then he picked it back up and officers fired at him again.

McGee is still in the hospital in critical condition. Chief Reyes says there were other guns and more ammo in McGee's car.

Chief Reyes says "This was a very dynamic situation that was occurring. I'm very thankful for the quick response from our officers. This could have easily resulted in the injury or death of a lot more people"

Chief Reyes got emotional when he was asked about how his officers were doing. He says he's proud of them, what they did wasn't easy, and he adds
it's important to look out for their mental health.

Police were dispatched to the 900 block of E. Beltline Road in response to an active shooter at approximately 12:17 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a single victim with a gunshot wound. They observed the suspect described as a black male with a long gun fleeing the scene in a black Chrysler four-door vehicle.

During a press conference, police revealed shortly after the initial dispatch officers responded to a car crash not far from the initial scene where the suspect had crashed onto another vehicle. It was there that police observed the suspect with a large weapon and five officers fired at him.

The suspect was removed from his vehicle and life-saving measures began while medics arrived at the scene to transport him to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition. The person in the other vehicle was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police say the single victim of the gunshot wound from the suspect is a physician from the medical building and was also transported to the hospital and said to be in stable condition.

Cedar Hill police say a criminal investigation is underway and will be conducted by Dallas Sheriff's office and the District Attorney. All officers involved in the incident have been placed in administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.
