Taneja: capacity crowd at Rangers opener was a bad idea

FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - The director of Tarrant County Public Health is taking exception to yesterday's huge crowd at Globe Life Field.

"If we continue to do what we did yesterday, we’re asking for trouble," says Tarrant County Public Health Director Vinny Taneja, referring to the  shoulder-to-shoulder capacity crowd of more than 38,000 at yesterday's Rangers home opener.

"That was a lot of people together in a situation where things could go bad," Taneja told the Tarrant County Commissioners Court Tuesday morning. "From a disease standpoint, it's still pretty active in the community."

Taneja says even though COVID-19 is on a downward trend in Tarrant County, people still need to exercise personal responsibility.

"(Almost) 40,000 people crowding in a stadium was a bad example of personal responsibility, so we need to be very, very mindful of what we do, because this is still out there and active in our community," says Taneja.

Many in Monday's crowd were not wearing masks, as was required (but apparently not enforced) by the Rangers.

Taneja says this is still not the time for people to be letting their guard down.

"We need to wear our masks, we need to maintain a six-foot distance which wasn't happening yesterday, and we need to avoid large crowds which, you know, yesterday was a prime
