It took a day but a Tarrant County jury has reached a verdict in the trial of a former Arlington police officer who was facing a criminal charge.

The jury got the case Friday, had the weekend off, and after more than six hours Monday decided the former officer is not guilty.

Ravi Singh was accused of criminal negligence in the 2019 shooting death of Margarita Brooks. Singh was sent to conduct a welfare check on Brooks. As he approached, her dog charged him. Singh opened fire, grazing the dog but the bullet ricocheted and struck and killed Brooks.

Prosecutors said Singh had a duty to pay attention to the area behind the dog. The defense argued there was no way Singh could have predicted how the bullet would ricochet when it hit the ground.

The judge has already released Singh from all criminal charges.
