In a late night meeting, the Texas Senate approved a new Texas Senate district map which is not popular among Tarrant County Democrats.
Democrats contend this map divides up Tarrant County people of color and dilutes their influence in the state legislature. They claim the map redraws Texas Senate District 10 which, for now, is entirely in Tarrant County and includes swaths of Fort Worth, Forest Hill and several other urban communities that are home to many blacks, Asian and Hispanic voters.
The new map would stretch District 10 west and south to take in seven additional counties with a more rural and more white population.
Democrats including incumbent Democrat Beverly Powell argue this new configuration would weaken the influence of minorities and would likely result in the seat flipping to the GOP in the next election.
