A task force has presented recommendations for Plano ISD's next bond proposal. The group has recommended $1.5 billion in work.
The recommendation is broken into four parts:
Proposition A: $1.2 billion for school renovations, security, transportation, fine arts, athletics, technology and construction of a career-technology education center.
Proposition B: $173 million for classroom technology
Proposition C: $130 million for an event center
Proposition D: $28 million for improvements at athletic stadiums
Proposition A would include $54 million for security and $48 million for transportation.
"I can't get my one kid to school on time and yet, the district takes approximately 14,000 students a day to school on time," said task force co-chair Rick Cinclair.
Proposal A would also include $135 million for CTE projects and a CTE education center.
"We're going to prepare every student, no matter what route they're taking, to go forward when they leave our schools and be productive in society," Cinclair said.
Deputy Superintendent Johnny Hill said a poll showed 52% of people responding supported Proposal A with 39% against. He said those numbers are similar to Plano ISD's last bond six years ago.
Hill said 83% of those who said they were against the bond cited property taxes as their biggest concern.
"I don't think it comes as any big surprise the main reason [for those against] is people already feel like property taxes are already too high," Hill said. Hill said the proposal presented this week would not force a change in the property tax rate.
For technology, Proposition B, 48% were in favor, 44% against.
For the event center, Proposition C, 31% were in favor, 62% were against.
For athletic stadiums, Proposition D, 29% were in favor, 66% were against.
Voters in Plano approved a $481 million bond in 2016. The school board will vote on this year's bond on August 16 and expects to put it before voters this November.
