Texas is in first place on U-Haul's Growth Index for the second straight year. It was the number one destination for people booking one-way U-Haul rentals in 2022 and 2021.
"The 2022 trends in migration followed very similar patterns to 2021 with Texas, Florida, the Carolinas, and the Southwest continuing to see solid growth," U-Haul International President John Taylor said. "We still have areas with strong demand for one-way rentals. While overall migration in 2021 was record-breaking, we continue to experience significant customer demand to move out of some geographic areas to destinations at the top of our growth list."
The company's data does not specifically correlate with population or economic growth in a state, but the company said its Growth Index is a way to measure how well states and cities are attracting and keeping residents.
California was the least popular destination for one-way rentals in 2022.
This is the fifth year since 2016 that Texas was the most popular destination for one-way U-Haul rentals.
United Van Lines this week released its own list called the "National Movers Study."
That company reports Vermont was a popular destination for in-migration, while New Jersey had the highest percentage of outbound moves. Texas qualified as one of United Van Lines’ "balanced states." The company showed 54.3% of Texas moves were in-bound to the state, while 45.7% were out-bound.
