Two amendments to the Texas Constitution related to school district property taxes passed by substantial margins on Saturday.

The first proposition voted on state-wide by voters will lower school district property taxes for homeowners over the age of 65 and those who are disabled.

The second proposition will raise the homestead exemption on school district property taxes from $25,000 to $40,000.

Both propositions passed with overwhelming support from voters, 86% on the first and 84% on the second.

Proposition 2 is expected to save the average homeowner $175 a year on their school property tax bill, according to the state lawmakers who sponsored the measure.

Governor Greg Abbott called the election a “victory for all property owners in Texas” on Saturday after the votes were tallied.
