Third special session of Texas Legislature to begin in Austin today

In Austin today the state legislature will begin it's third special session, this time to tackle redistricting.

Every ten years the Texas legislature redraws political boundaries, a process that Brandon Rottinghaus a Political Science professor at the University of Houston says is always contentious.

He says with Texas adding two new congressional seats it’s a chance for ruling Republicans to tighten their grip on their levers of power, and they wont have any major opposition.

Rottinghaus says no matter what happens, expect this to wind up in court.

Governor Abbott has put four other items on the agenda, including legislation to decide whether state or local governments can mandate COVID-19 vaccines. Abbott says a single statewide standard is necessary.
