The Dallas and Fort Worth YMCA Turkey Trots are back in-person this year and tens of thousands of people spent this Thanksgiving morning trotting away.

“I can eat like crazy and not have one piece of guilt,” one trotter said as he took off on his 8:30 a.m. eight-mile run in Dallas.

It’s been a little while since these runs have been able to happen in person. Trotters haven’t gotten together to run since 2019, and you could really feel the energy in the air. Everyone has different reasons for getting up early and coming out to run on Thanksgiving, but every single person agreed on one thing: it felt good to be back.

“We’re excited, it’s good to get out and get a good run in,” one woman said.

Officials say about 13,000 runners showed up in Dallas, from 49 states and 10 countries. Thousands did either a 5K or 10K in Fort Worth, as well. And a virtual Turkey Trot was held for people looking to avoid crowds and traffic.
