Almost a month after a crash that killed her husband, the widow of a fallen Euless police detective is back home.

Officers from the Euless Police Department and others were on hand to watch Priscilla Cervantes get released from JPS Hospital Wednesday morning.

"She has made such a miraculous recovery from her injuries," says Euless Police Sgt. Scott Peterson. "Anticipating each day with the progress that we were getting from the hospital staff, knowing that she was progressing beyond what they thought she would, has just been astounding and remarkable for us."

Priscilla Cervantes and her two sons were in the vehicle with her husband, Det. Alex Cervantes, when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver in Lake Worth during Thanksgiving weekend.

Det. Cervantes was killed, and Priscilla and her two boys were injured.

The fact that Priscilla Cervantes will get to be home for Christmas is truly a Christmas miracle.

"A little under a month ago, (we were) not knowing that she was going to be able to survive," says Sgt. Peterson; "and to know that she's able to go home just before Christmas is just remarkable."

Mrs. Cervantes still has a long road to recovery ahead of her.

"It is definitely difficult with some of the recovery she's still got to undertake," Peterson says; "but to be able to be home with family before Christmas, you couldn't ask for anything better."

The two boys were previously released from the hospital and are on the road to a full recovery.

"They blow us away by their mindset and their positive attitude they have," says Peterson. "They've even made gifts for our officers at our police department while they've been home, so it's just been truly amazing."
