Police say an elderly Connecticut man is lucky to be alive after he was struck by a van and dragged for three blocks.

The incident happened Friday evening in Ansonia, about 12 miles northwest of New Haven, where the 81-year-old victim was crossing a street, according to the Asonia Police Department.

After the man was struck by the van, he somehow became caught and was dragged along the roadway "several hundred feet," unbeknownst to the driver, police said.

The unidentified driver finally stopped when a horrified witness ran into the street and flagged him down, Lieutenant Patrick Lynch told WFSB.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital to be treated for several severe injuries. He was last reported in stable condition.

No charges had been filed in the incident, although Lynch said the investigation is "ongoing."

“If you are driving at night and it's dusk, you have to be ever vigilant to what's going on around you," Lynch told WFSB. "If you're going to be walking you need to wear something bright colored, a reflective vest or at least bright colored clothes that vehicles can see."
