Former President Donald Trump made it known last week ahead of the 2022 mid-term elections that he has a “big announcement” planned for tomorrow, and many speculate that he’ll announce his candidacy for the Presidency and will seek a return to the White House in 2024.
In the eyes of one freshly re-elected governor though, the announcement would be a “terrible idea” at this point in time.
Republican Chris Sununu won a fourth two-year term as governor of New Hampshire even as his state elected Democrat Maggie Hassan to the Senate and Democrats Chris Pappas and Ann McLane Kuster to the House of Representatives, becoming the lone big GOP win in the state as the predicted nationwide “red wave” did not come to pass.
Sununu said in a new interview with George Stephanopoulos that he believes most people don’t want to spend the holiday season focused on politics, especially after a contentious election season just weeks prior.
“It's going to be great for the media,” Sununu said. “Saturday Night Live will probably love it, but for the rest of us, we're going to focus on spending time with our families and kind of taking a breath in the quiet of a nonpolitical world.”
Additionally, the Republican lawmaker, who has served as New Hampshire’s governor since 2016, isn’t particularly enthused about another Trump campaign no matter when it gets officially announced. When Sununu was asked if he would get behind a Trump 2024 bid, he responded, “Not really.”
