A man who reportedly threw $200,000 out of a moving car on an Oregon interstate said that he wanted to “bless others” with the cash.
Colin Davis McCarthy, 38, was identified by Oregon State Police as the man who tossed the money out on Interstate 5, according to KEZI 9 and Oregon Live. Indeed, KEZI 9 said that “several random bystanders” experienced a windfall.
However, not everyone was happy about the cash confetti.
“OSP is urging the public not (to) go searching for money on the highway – which is very dangerous and contributes to a hazardous condition,” state police spokesperson Capt. Kyle Kennedy wrote in an email, per Oregon Live.
Additionally, KEZI 9 reported that McCarthy actually got the money by draining his family’s shared accounts, “leaving them penniless,” as the bills flew out over the roadway. They told state troopers it was typical behavior for McCarthy.
“The family says that even though the odds are long, they're asking anyone who found any cash to please return it to Oregon State Police because the money is very much needed by the family,” according to the outlet.
OSP Lieutenant Jim Andrews said that he believes the money is likely gone.
Oregon State Police troopers responded to Interstate 5 near milepost 192 just south of Eugene at about 7:23 p.m. Tuesday after McCarthy threw the cash out of a vehicle. Authorities told him to stop throwing the money, as it was dark there could be a potentially dangerous situation on the roadway.
By that time, McCarthy said he had already thrown around $200,000 from the vehicle. One woman at the scene told KEZI 9 that she found $300.
“OSP stuck around for a while to ensure public safety, but did not charge McCarthy with a crime,” though they did consider charging him, said KEZI 9. “Several bystanders did pick up the thrown money, and it was almost completely gone by 8 p.m. that night.”
Andrews said that anyone with shared accounts should be careful if they are estranged with others on the account. He recommends opening a second account to separate money.
