While the 2024 election is still more than a year away, a new poll has found that only one-third of Americans think President Joe Biden is deserving of another term in office.

The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS, was completed before the indictment of former President Donald Trump. However, CNN shared that further recent polling did not show a change in how Americans viewed and favored Biden because of the charges.

Overall, the survey examined Americans’ views of the president. Among the results, it found that a majority of Democrats would prefer to see someone else as the nominee for the party next year.

Currently, the poll reports that Biden has an approval rating of 42%, with 57% of respondents disapproving of the work he is doing as president.

Among the most troubling points Americans view with Biden’s work in office include his handling of immigration (35% approve), the economy (37%), national security (44%), and the country’s relationship with China (40%).

The only issue where Biden scored higher than his overall job rating was his environmental policy, where 46% approve of the work he has done.

When asked about the president’s personal attributes, the pollers found respondents held mostly negative opinions about Biden. This included 67% who say he doesn’t have the stamina and sharpness to effectively be president, 65% who think he doesn’t inspire confidence, and 54% who think he isn’t honest and trustworthy.

A majority of Americans also appear to think that Biden isn’t able to work effectively with Congress (48%-51%), a sentiment that has plagued his time in office.

Only 32% of Americans think Biden deserves to be reelected for a second term, a number that was at 37% in December, the poll noted.

Those who don’t think Biden deserves another four years when his term ends in 2024 are mostly younger Americans, with only 26% of those under 35 supporting the idea of him winning in 2024.

As for his party, he’s lost 10 points since December, when 63% supported his reelection, but now that number is down to 53%.

The CNN poll was conducted from March 1 through 31 and included responses from 1,595 adults in the U.S. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
