With Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s siege now entering its third week, former American Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen visited Ukraine’s border with Poland, watching as refugees fled the country in droves.
Pence spoke about the “unspeakable violence on the people of Ukraine” doled out by Russia in video obtained by CBS News.
Taking a moment to speak with a Ukrainian refugee holding a young child who said she was forced from her home by Russia’s continued attacks, Pence said to her, “I want you to know I used to be the vice president. I don't speak on behalf of our government anymore, but I can tell you the American people are with you.”
Pence also tweeted a public statement about his visit.
The Pences made the trip to Ukraine as a member of an Evangelical Christian organization called Samaritan’s Purse, which provides charitable relief to people in need. The group has “dozens” of staff members in Ukraine, Moldova and Poland, according to CBS News.
“You have strong hearts,” Pence told another refugee. “Proud of you.”
