According to officials, a box of loaded guns was found at a Parkland, Florida, school on Thursday that was later discovered to belong to the school's principal.
The incident occurred at Somerset Academy in Parkland, just miles away from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 were killed and 17 injured in a 2018 shooting, WPLG reported.
The school's principal, Geyler Castro, was reportedly bringing boxes into the school from her car when she accidentally grabbed one that contained two firearms inside, according to a letter home to parents from the school.
Officials found the box unattended, inside a locked room and a police investigation quickly followed, according to the station.
"No one intended to bring a weapon into the building. The box was among many items brought into the locked room from the principal's vehicle," the board said.
While the incident is being called an accident, it is still a felony to carry a gun into a school building in Florida. But no charges have been brought against Castro, and it is not clear if they will be.
The charter school promised in its statements that it will continue to "maintain open lines of communication" and that the matter is being taken seriously.
"Nothing is more important than the safety of our students, staff, and school community," the statement read.
