Something Offbeat: A ‘blood cleanse’ goes viral

Many “health” trends like these can be found while swiping through social media feeds. However, some aren’t healthy at all – including a “blood cleanse” that was recently trending.

Blood cleanses often feature ingredients such as ginger and dandelion or burdock root, “with assertions that they’re high in antibacterial and antioxidant properties,” according to Allure. Proponents claim these cleanses can stimulate the liver to remove toxins from the body.

This week on “Something Offbeat” registered dietician and bestselling cookbook author Toby Amidor helps us debunk this trend and other strange social media health fads.

“It’s very scary, because it’s almost like the Wild West when you’re talking about supplements,” she said.
