“Definitely wasted 3 hours of my life making this today” is how the description starts for what the internet seems to agree is one of the most disturbing creations in quite some time.
A Redditor who posts under the profile u/PizzaLater created and posted a 30-second commercial for an imaginary pizza restaurant that was made exclusively through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Nothing in the clip is real in any physical sense. All of it, from the pizza and ingredients to the people to even the voiceover, was completely invented digitally by computers.
And as one might expect, it looks, sounds and FEELS like it bubbled straight up from the uncanny valley fully maximized to make your skin crawl because everything about it feels just off enough.
The fake commercial for a fake restaurant called Pepperoni Hug Spot has transcended far beyond its original posting to the subreddit r/midjourney and is now available to invade your subconscious through viewings on YouTube, Twitter and TikTok
“Text-to-video technology is still in its infancy, so the quality of the clips remains quite rough. However, it was perfect for this spoof commercial,” Pizza Later wrote to TODAY.com in an email. “A simple prompt like ‘a woman eating a slice of pizza, TV commercial’ yielded fantastic results.”
