Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have expressed interest in setting up camp in space, and NASA’s Artemis project is set to bring humans to the moon for the first time in decades.
If people are going to be spending more time in space, it would be good to know what time it is there. This week, “Something Offbeat” checked in on plans the European Space Agency has to figure it out.
In February, news broke that the agency is working on creating a lunar time zone.
“When you have humans operating and living on the moon, they have a different reference,” explained Bernhard Hufenbach, head of the European Space Agency strategic planning and outreach office for space exploration. “And at that stage probably they will operate spacecraft… having a lunar time zone definition makes sense.”
Hufenback and host Mike Rogers explore how time zones work, and how these plans might impact the future of space travel.
