Governor Greg Abbott has issued an executive order maintaining that vaccine mandates are prohibited across Texas.
The order is serving as a reminder to government entities across the state as COVID cases continue to rise.
"Vaccine requirements and exemptions have historically been determined by the legislature, and their involvement is particularly important to avoid a patchwork of vaccine mandates across Texas," said Governor Abbott.
The governor has also added another issue item to the Special Session agenda, whether any state or local governmental entities can require an individual get a COVID-19 vaccine and, if so, what exemptions should apply to such mandate.
As of Tuesday, 13,666 COVID patients are hospitalized statewide, according to the DSHS. The state has 7,898 hospital beds and 365 ICU beds available for more patients. In the Houston area, 3,450 COVID patients are currently hospitalized, with 1,456 hospital beds and only 62 ICU beds available.
