Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) will stop in Fort Worth on Wednesday to seek support for one of his legislative priorities, school choice.
Abbott will be at Nolan Catholic High School to promote the bill, which would allow taxpayers' money to be used to pay private school tuition. Under the proposal, each student could get up to $8,000 in public money to pay for private school. Tuition at Nolan Catholic runs more than $19,000 a year.
School choice is far from a sure thing. Despite Abbott's support, Democratic lawmakers are opposed to it, saying it would hurt funding for public schools.
Many Republicans oppose it as well. In fact, the Republican-controlled House approved an amendment to its budget proposal that forbids any state money from being used to fund a voucher or school choice program.
