Democratic gubernatorial candidate Robert 'Beto' O'Rourke was in Dallas Wednesday and discussed his plan to lower property taxes for Texans.
This week, many North Texas homeowners have experienced sticker shock as they receive their property tax assessments from their local county appraisal offices. In some cases, homeowners are reporting market value increases of more than 50%; homestead exemptions can limit the increase in the appraised value to 10% annually.
O'Rourke called Governor Greg Abbott the "single greatest driver of inflation." He criticized the governor over soaring property taxes.
He suggested expanding Medicare and legalizing marijuana and sports gambling as ways to lessen the tax burden on residents and increase state income.
Gov. Abbott has pointed out that Texas is experiencing boom in housing demand, leading to a rise in property values.
