Wyoming congressional Republican Liz Cheney is fighting for her political life. The least populated state in the country holds its primary tonight and Cheney is in danger of losing the seat she has held since 2016.
Rice University political scientist Mark Jones says nearly a million dollars in donations from Texans to Cheney's campaign is remarkable when you consider fewer than 600,000 people, less than the population of Collin County, call Wyoming home.
He says Cheney will likely lose to Trump backed candidate Harriett Hageman. "While Cheney enjoys the support of mainstream moderates, that wing of the party has been eclipsed within the GOP by the more Trumpian wing."
Texas donors to Cheney's campaign include former president George W. Bush, campaign strategist Karl Rove, former U.S. Commerce Secretary Donald Evans and oil and gas executives, including Ray Hunt.
It's also worth noting Cheney's father Dick was vice president under George W. Bush and the CEO of Halliburton.
Jones calls these donations a last gasp by the establishment wing of the Republican Party. "They may still have enough money to donate a million dollars to a Wyoming congressional candidate, but has few votes out of Wyoming which is what Liz Cheney is going to need."
Cheney is one of two Republicans on the January sixth committee
Jones says Cheney will be lucky to get 35 to 40 percent of the vote. There are no runoffs in Wyoming.
