Texas Senate OKs bill to allow college athletes to receive compensation

AUSTIN (1080 KRLD)- Many Texas state Senators have reversed course -- to vote for a bill that would allow college athletes to get paid for endorsements and merchandise bearing their likenesses.

Thursday, the Texas Senate overwhelmingly passed a measure that will pave the way for college players to beneft financially for the use of their names, images and likenesses.

The NCAA has long banned such compensation but in recent years has been wavering. Other states already have laws in place to allow it.

In fact, Florida has one set to take effect on July 1st. Same with Alabama. The Texas Senators -- many of whom oppose the idea on principle -- nevertheless went along because they fear many top college prospects will commit to schools outside Texas unless they can receive compensation.
