AUSTIN (1080 KRLD)- The Texas Division of Emergency Management has activated Texas Task Force One to respond to Florida ahead of Hurricane Ian. TDEM says the manpower and equipment are being sent after a request by FEMA.

Texas is sending three urban search and rescue teams with 45 people, four boats and two dogs.

"The spirit of Texas is helping one another in times of need, and we are proud to help our fellow Americans in Florida ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Ian," said Governor Abbott.

"Texas is no stranger to hurricane disaster response efforts, and we recognize the urgency for additional resources in preparation of this Category 3 storm. We greatly appreciate the generosity of Floridians and aid the State of Florida has sent us during times of crisis in our state—and we are honored to do the same."

While the western Gulf of Mexico nearest Texas is clear, the Texas Division of Emergency Management says Ian and Hurricane Fiona last week show why September is considered the peak of hurricane season. September is also "National Preparedness Month," designated by FEMA "to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time."

TDEM is urging people to make an emergency plan, communicate that plan with family and stay aware of potential severe weather.
