A dire warning out of Houston on Covid 19
City of Houston chief medical officer Dr. David Persse says the city is seeing a huge increase in viral activity. He says if you are unvaccinated you represent a danger to yourself, to others and particularly your own family. "We have found that those who get infected are most often infected by another family member."
Persse says their medical system is at the breaking point. "Hospitals right now are full. The emergency department are holding as many as 30 admissions in some hospitals, waiting for beds upstairs that simply don't exist right now. Hospitals are having ambulance crews stay with patients in the hallway for hours on end because they don't have enough room in the emergency department because they don't have enough room in the hospital." He stresses many patients are there because they've had a stroke or heart attack or have been in a care wreck, and now they can't get care.
Persse says the way the virus is spreading, it's almost certain the unvaccinated will get it. "This virus is so extremely contagious your chances of getting though this without having to become either vaccinated or infected is essentially zero. If you are unvaccinated now, you represent a risk to yourself and your family members."
He say this chain must be broken, and the only way to do it is by getting vaccinated. "Over two point five billion people on the planet have been vaccinated. If there was a problem with the vaccine we would know it by now. So for those folks who say they're unsure or afraid, I don't know what you're afraid of."
He says this vaccine has undergone more scrutiny than any other vaccine in history.
The city of Houston has been testing wastewater for virus in July of 2020. The wastewater predicts what's going to happen two to four weeks ahead of time. Current predicts show the virus is spreading 3.7 times more rapidly than it was a year ago in July. "Our situations in the hospitals which is already dire and dangerous, I can pretty much guarantee you it's only going to worsen over the next four weeks. So please, get vaccinated."
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has put a mask mandate in place for city employees. He has also asked Governor Abbott to allow school districts to decide if masks must be worn on their campuses.
