The nation's largest healthcare chain has been hit with a data breach. HCA Healthcare says a list of 11 million patient names, email addresses, and phone numbers was found online.
The company used the information for automated emails. The list did not contain Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or information about patients' medical conditions.
HCA owns Medical City hospitals in North Texas. It also owns the CareNow chain of urgent care clinics. The company has posted a list of the affected locations.
The list of affected locations also includes HCA hospitals in the Houston area, St. David's hospitals in the Austin area, plus hospitals in Corpus Christi and McAllen.
HCA Healthcare reported the data breach to law enforcement and has hired forensic and threat intelligence advisors. The company is reminding patients to stay vigilant about any emails, phone calls, or text messages which appear to be fraudulent. It will also offer credit monitoring and identity protection services where appropriate.
