Man killed by Corpus Christi officer during catalytic converter theft

A man has died in Corpus Christi where he was shot by a police officer stopping the theft of a catalytic converter yesterday.

Officials say the officer was walking thrrough the parking lot of an apartment complex when he saw a man underneath a car sawing off a converter.

While trying to arrest that man, the officer was confronted by a second man with a gun. The officer shot that man who was taken to the hospital where he died.

The first man got away and they're still looking for him.

Thefts of catalytic converters have become common nation-wide because the precious metals inside them fetch large prices from scrap metal yards. The problem has worsened during the pandemic.
