A man is in the hospital after getting shot by Austin police yesterday.

Austin Assistant Police Chief Troy Gay explains this all went down on a major Austin freeway, Highway 183 running along the west side of Austin-Bergstrom International.

A man armed with a knife was standing right in the middle of traffic at the height of Austin rush hour, An off-duty officer drove up and parked his unmarked car to stop traffic. He called for back-up and when a marked squad car arrived, the officers tried to calm the man down but he refused to drop the knife. When he charged them, two officers shot him. But even then, on the ground, the man was not dropping the knife so that's when they Tazed him. Once he was dis-armed, the officers moved in to restrain him while paramedics treated his wounds and moved him to the hospital.

He was listed in stable condition.
