Today is a sacred day in Texas history. March 6th in 1836 is the day the defenders of the Alamo were slaughtered by Santa Anna's Mexican army.

At dawn on the 13th day of the siege, Santa Anna's troops breached the wall. The fighting lasted about 90 minutes and all the defenders were killed including Colonel Travis, James Bowie and Davy Crockett.

Forty-six days later, the fledgling Texas army defeated Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto.

This morning at the Alamo site in San Antonio, there was a 6 a.m. ceremony including readings, vignettes, music, a wreath-laying, and a musket volley.
