Texas Billionaire Red McCombs has died at the age of 95.

In his varied career, he was a radio mogul, a pro sports owner, a car dealership magnate and a generous philanthropist who gave away hundreds of millions of dollars.

Born in the west Texas town of Spur, near Lubbock, McCombs moved to San Antonio in his 20s and began to buy car dealerships, eventually owning 50.

He expanded into the petroleum world and into radio ownership,co-founding Clear Channel which eventually grew into the largest radio station group owner in the US.

In 1973, he brought pro basketball to San Antonio, acquiring the ABA Dallas Chaparrals and moving the team to San Antonio, changing the name to the Spurs and joining the NBA in 1976.

McCombs also once owned the Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Vikings.

His philanthropy included eight-figure donations to, among others, the University of Texas in Austin and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
