Today's an anniversary day for Texas which joined the United States on this date in 1845.

Having been an independent republic for nearly a decade, Texas was annexed as the 28th state.

Texas declared its independence from Mexico on March 2nd in 1836, four days before the fall of the Alamo. Texas appealed for US annexation that same year.

After nine years of political back-and-forth, President John Tyler signed an annexation bill on March 1st of 1845 but it still had to be ratified by Texas. Once that was taken care of, the final measure was signed by President James Polk on December 29th in 1845.
