Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – One person was killed, and 50 homes had to be evacuated, after a brush fire broke overnight in Henderson.

Firefighters first got the call about flames in the Whitney Mesa Park area near Sunset and Arroyo Grande around 4:20am Tuesday and quickly called a second alarm. Crews from Henderson FD were joined by the Clark County Fire Department, as well as the Bureau of Land Management.

Calm conditions helped firefighters quickly contain the fire and keep it from spreading. One nearby home suffered some minor damage, but all those who were evacuated were able to return to their homes not long after being told to get out.

In total, the fire was estimated to have burned roughly 2 acres.

During a press briefing, Henderson Fire Chief Scott Vivier said that a body was found in the brush, but no other information was made available.

Firefighters were expected to stay on scene through the rest of Wednesday to put down any hot spots that may ignite.
