Chester County woman’s Facebook group uses birds to battle COVID-19 anxiety, isolation

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) A Chester County woman wants to connect people with birds as a way of dealing with anxiety and isolation.

“There are a lot of studies now that are proving that connecting with nature is beneficial, vital really, to our well being,” said Holly Merker of Downingtown.

She has created a Facebook group called “Ornitherapy,” or therapy through birds.

“The Facebook groups that are birding-centric and nature-centric, they are gaining new members exponentially, by the day. They’ll report like a hundred new members a day. And that’s because people are craving what is innate to humans,” she said.

She says "Ornitherapy" is not just for experienced birders, but for anyone who wants to see nature in a new and healing way.

Merker started the group a few weeks ago and already has 1,500 members.
